Benefits of Snow in the Landscape

snowOn the positive side, all this snow does have a benefit for our landscape plants and environment.

  1. A “blanket of snow” provides excellent insulation and protects plants from harsh drying winter winds. Winter winds can desiccate foliage and bare soil.
  2. It protects plants from the freeze/thaw cycles that heave them out of the ground.
  3. Snow cover moderates soil temperatures, thus slowing the flow of heat from the warm ground to the cold air above. Generally, temperatures underneath a layer of snow increase about 2 degrees Fahrenheit for each inch of accumulation.
  4. Snow helps preserve moisture in the soil during winter and provides water to the soil as it melts in the spring. Even dormant plants continue to lose moisture as water evaporates through their branches.
  5. Snow also replenishes the water supply.
